A man has died following a collision on the A6

Hundreds dispersed and several police vehicles damaged after illegal event in Wigan last night

At around 1.10am this morning (Monday 19 April 2021), a Fiat Punto was involved in a collision with a BMW as well as two parked cars which were unoccupied at the time on Wellington Road North near to the junction of Crossley Road. The Fiat had earlier failed to stop for police.

A man – who is believed to be aged in his 20’s – sadly died at the scene.

Two men – who were in the BMW and both aged in their 20’s – were treated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct by GMP’s Professional Standards Branch in line with normal policy.

Inspector Daniel Byrne, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Sadly a man has lost his life as a result of this collision. Our thoughts remain with his family.

“Road closures are currently in place on the A6 whilst enquiries remain ongoing. It is advised that commuters avoid the area where possible and instead use alternative routes. We thank the public for their patience as we deal with this incident.”
