CCTV appeal after off-duty police officer assaulted outside Supermarket in Manchester

On Saturday 16th October, at just after 7.30pm, witnesses telephoned 999, when the GMP officer, who was not in uniform at the time, was assaulted outside of the Morrisons supermarket on Stanley Road, Whitefield, Manchester.

Enquiries have established that around 7.25pm the off-duty officer was outside of the supermarket when he heard a disturbance within the shop.

Two men later exited the shop and were being pursued by the store’s security officer following a theft.

The officer gave chase on foot, identifying himself as a police officer.

He located the two men and arrested one male on suspicion of theft. However, the police constable was later struck with a weapon to the head and then subsequently punched several times.

The men are then believed to have fled towards Elms Road, Whitefield.

The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
