On 17 July Lord Mayor Donna Ludford and, leader of Manchester City Council, Bev Craig will abseil off a 26-storey building in Castlefield – a 270ft drop- to raise money for We LoveMCR Charity.

Over 100 daredevils will be taking part in the biggest abseil Manchester has ever seen, descending an eye-watering 270ft top to bottom down the side of 26-storey One Regent Tower in Castlefield, which offers rare views of the Manchester skyline to the east and Salford Quays to the west.

In 2021 the We Love MCR charity held a sponsored Firewalk on 700 degree hot coals in St. Peter’s Square.  This year, the charity wanted to scale new heights and after a public vote on their next mind-over-matter challenge, and an abseil off one of the city’s high-rise towers was chosen.

The We Love MCR charity works with some of our most vulnerable young people and most ambitious communities to help them write Manchester’s next chapter. The charity prides itself on supporting Mancunians to improve lives across the city.

The event will now take place across the weekend of 16 – 17 July. If you would like to take part, please visit: https://www.welovemcrcharity.org/challenge-event-series .

Abseilers will be joined by young people who have benefitted from the Charity’s Manchester’s Rising Stars Fund, including young photographers who will help to capture the scale of the challenge.

Leader of Manchester City Council, Councillor Bev Craig, said:

“After climbing the Three –Peaks of Yorkshire with 103 other fundraisers on behalf of the Charity earlier this month, I’m keen to get involved in another challenge for such a good cause.  We Love MCR is a great Charity that supports so many Mancunians, and I am very excited and also a bit terrified for the abseil on the 17th!”

Lord Mayor, Donna Ludford, said:

“Every penny we raise for We Love MCR goes to help local young people and our communities to fulfil their ambitions and potential and truly makes a world of difference. I’ve never abseiled before so I’m both nervous and excited to take part!”
