Exhibition celebrating Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on display in Central Library

Manchester City Council, Archives+ and Manchester Metropolitan University have collaborated to curate an exhibition to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

The exhibition is a celebration of the triumphs of Queen Elizabeth II and a way that visitors of all ages can learn about the queen’s life and, her lasting connection to the city of Manchester.

Starting from her birth in 1926, the carefully curated exhibition follows the milestones of Elizabeth’s reign and the key moments in her life from birth till the present day. The exhibition also includes a special section detailing Her Majesty’s previous visits to the city.

Visitors will also be able to see special footage of the queen that has been extracted from historic archives especially for this exhibition.  The video clips, produced by Manchester Metropolitan University’s North West Film Archive, accompany the exhibition and give an insight into how much life, and Manchester, has changed during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

The exhibition is on display in Central Library on the ground floor, in the Archives+ area, and Manchester City Council want people of all ages to visit the exhibition and celebrate the once in a lifetime event.

The display runs from 5 May to 30 June 2022.

Councillor Rabnawaz Akbar, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods said:

“This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for residents to learn about the local history and Her Majesty’s connection to our city. The video clips are really engaging and full of informative content- offering a previously unseen insight into the queen’s life.

“On behalf of Manchester City Council, I want to thank Archives+ and Manchester Metropolitan University’s Northwest Film Archive, who have complied the videos, photos and information for this insightful exhibition.

“I particularly enjoyed the section on her relationship to Manchester – it was interesting to see the queen’s visits over the past 70 years and of course, how much the city has changed since then!”
