Free parking on Saints match days in most town centre car parks

Saints fans will be able to park for free on the majority of town centre car parks when fans return to the stadium.

St Helens Borough Council has been in consultation with St Helens R.F.C. to find new parking options with the planned demolition of Chalon Way Car Park, which had been a match day parking facility for fans.

Now fans will be able to use all open-air car parks across the town centre for free when they can finally return to the stadium. All car parks and on street parking bays except Tontine and St Mary’s Multi-Storey Car Parks will be open for match day parking for free.

Councillor Richard McCauley, Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer fans free parking on the majority of our council car parks, which will be open for free from two hours before kick-off until after the end of the match. We hope by opening them up earlier fans will want to use the time to come in advance and support our town centre businesses in advance of the game.

“We know that on a typical match day we would have around 200 cars on the car park, rising towards 600 for local derbies. While Chalon Way was our closest location to the ground the vast majority of our town centre car parks are only a short walk from the ground. We know that if everyone follows the rules and we can help keep Covid-19 rates down Saints fans will hopefully be back in the Totally Wicked Stadium at some level from May and we’re prepared for when that great day comes.”

St.Helens R.F.C. General Manager, Dave Hutchinson said: “When we heard the car park at Chalon Way was being demolished we were naturally worried about how this would affect our fans on matchdays.

“But we are grateful to the council for opening up a number of open-air car parks across the town for are fans to park for free. This kind gesture will hopefully encourage more fans to come and watch us play at the Totally Wicked Stadium once government restrictions allow.”

There will be more information on the free parking plans as fans prepare to return to the ground later this year.
