The Warrington and Halton Road Safety Partnership will be educating cyclists and drivers on cycle safety on Tuesday 31 August.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of cyclists in Warrington has increased dramatically. Because of the growing interest in cycling, more bike checks and cycle safety events are being held in and around Warrington through a partnership between local organisations.

The Partnership – made up of Warrington Borough Council’s Road Safety and Sustainable Travels teams, Cheshire Fire and Rescue and Cheshire Police – will be hosting the event at Time Square, outside Warrington Market, between 10am to 3pm on Tuesday 31 August (weather permitting).

Everyone is invited to attend the event, where cyclists and drivers can learn about the safe distance to overtake a cyclist using a close pass mat. Free bike checks and minor repairs will also be offered, and cyclists can obtain free resources such as bike lights, information on local cycle routes and much more.

Cllr Hans Mundry, cabinet member for transportation, highways and public realm, said: “More and more people have taken to cycling over the past 18 months and this event is a great opportunity to help cyclists to avoid harm and teach drivers on how to keep cyclists safe. We are seeing local interest in cycling increase, particularly given Warrington is the stage 5 finish host of the Tour of Britain, and also given that more people are getting on two wheels as a more environmentally friendly way of getting around.”

“The Halton and Warrington Road Safety Partnership is working hard to educate residents about road safety and cycling, and this event is a great opportunity to learn more and share some free resources. Head down to Time Square to get your bike checked for free and learn about the fantastic cycle routes we have throughout Warrington.”
