GMP’s specialist unit of officers crack down on vehicle thefts and organised crime

GMP’s specialist team of highly trained and dedicated officers has recovered over £6.6million worth of stolen vehicles in Greater Manchester over the last 12 months.

The Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit (TVIU), consisting of 33 officers (four sergeants and 29 police constables), operates force wide, identifying stolen cars and targeting vehicles which may have been used to commit crimes such as violent robberies or burglaries.

Between March 2019 and March 2020 the team has worked alongside GMP’s Serious and Organised Crime Group and the National Crime Agency. They have played an instrumental role in tackling organised crime groups involved in the supply of drugs and money laundering, resulting in the recovery of £706K of cash and the seizure of £501million worth of drugs.

Officers within the unit are trained in tactical pursuit and containment and are able to employ the most appropriate and safe tactics during fast-paced vehicle pursuits. They use both marked and covert cars, as well as ANPR technology, to catch burglars and robbers in stolen cars. Over the past year, the team has made over 530 arrests.

Superintendent John-Paul Ruffle, of GMP’s Specialist Operations Branch, said: “The outstanding work by TVIU has been a crucial resource in GMP disrupting some of our most dangerous criminals.

“Working alongside officers on district and our other specialist resources, this highly trained team makes quick and tactical decisions in order to take offenders off the streets of Greater Manchester and protect the public”.
