Hays Travel in Northwich benefits from the Townscape Heritage Project

Hays Travel, a recent addition to Witton Street in Northwich is the latest local business to benefit from the Townscape Heritage Project.

The project provided a grant towards new hand-painted signs, including a large fascia sign and a hanging sign, making a bright new addition to the area.

Hays Travel recently took over number 29 Witton Street which was built by local pawnbroker James Worsley as an investment property in 1902-03. The shop was originally two separate stores but was merged into one in 1939.

The Townscape Heritage Project is a National Lottery Heritage Fund partnership grant scheme with Cheshire West and Chester Council working to repair and restore specific shops in High Street and Witton Street, in Northwich. The project aims to enhance the quality and visual appearance of the town centre and improve the economic wellbeing of the town.

Councillor Richard Beacham, Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Growth, said: “We are delighted that the Townscape Heritage Project is continuing to provide benefits to local businesses in Northwich.

“The scheme only has a year left to run so we would encourage any interested businesses in the selected buildings to take up the offer of a grant as soon as possible. You can do this by contacting our Townscape Heritage Officer either by telephone on 01606 288825 or through the Townscape Heritage website at www.northwich-th.co.uk/contact-us.”

Don Bircham, Managing Director at Hays Travel (north west) said: “Although initially sceptical of a traditional sign to replace our modern design, I was delighted with the external signage which enhances the look and feel of our new shop.

“We received excellent support from the team at Cheshire and West and Chester Council and the financial contribution was very welcome. Northwich is a beautiful town and we feel privileged to have secured such a prominent and historic location.

“May I also take the opportunity to thank the good people of Northwich for the amazing support since we opened our doors. The staff recently won an award for finishing top performing shop in the entire north west region.”
