Junior safety officers from two Warrington schools have received an award for their success in ensuring their school friends are ‘safety smart’.
Junior safety officers from St Augustine’s RC Primary School and Stockton Heath Primary School used their initiative to run competitions, hold assemblies and create a variety of activities in their school to encourage safety amongst their peers as part of the junior safety scheme.
The junior safety scheme is run by Warrington Borough Council’s road safety team, with support from Cheshire Police.
Pupils from year five classes across Warrington schools were nominated to become junior safety officers for their school. Their role is to encourage their school friends to stay safe in school and at home.
The winning officers worked closely with the council and Cheshire Police to tackle important safety issues such as parking around school.
The junior officers also held special safety assemblies, put up displays, and hosted competitions surrounding various safety themes. This included information about road safety, cycle safety, water safety and personal safety.
As part of the scheme, the officers must also complete a workbook to evidence all their work over the last 12 months.
Officers from the two schools were announced joint winners because of their outstanding workbooks that showcased all the hard work they had put into their role.
Cllr Hans Mundry, cabinet member for transportation, highways and public realm, said: “It is fantastic to see young people getting involved in such an important issue that affects the whole community.
“These junior officers have done a great job sharing the importance of road safety to other young people in their schools, but also their families and friends, meaning they are helping to keep everyone safe and making a real difference in their local area.”
