Largescale recruitment events at Force Headquarters welcome over 100 students from the Professional Policing Degree course

Students at universities across the country have travelled to Manchester to visit force headquarters to attend full day events to learn more about policing and why GMP are considered one of the most improved forces in the country.

This week, students from Coventry University, Edge Hill university, Birmingham Newman, Sheffield Hallam, UCLan, York St John’s, Liverpool John Moores and the Leeds Campus of the University of Law joined GMP officers to learn more about being a police officer in Greater Manchester.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts, who welcomed the students to GMP, said: “I’m delighted to welcome students to come to our Force Headquarters to learn about Greater Manchester Police and our continued commitment to protecting the people of Greater Manchester and how it is a great privilege to serve our communities. Keeping the public safe will always be at the forefront of what we do on a day-to-day basis and having students who clearly showcase a passion for policing throughout their university degree is great to see.

“This last year has really highlighted the extraordinary efforts our officers go to protect the public. The work we do is hugely challenging, but it is a rewarding career, and I welcome those who have a vocation in policing to join us.”

The students were subject to a full day of inputs from departments across the force to showcase the career opportunities available to GMP, including CTPNW, Specialist operation PPSCD, District response, CID to gain an overview of the different career opportunities that GMP offers.

Chief Inspector Abid Sardar, who leads GMP’s Recruitment Support Team said: “There are forty five universities across the UK that offer a bespoke Professional Policing Degree. As a force we are keen to work with those studying this degree as they have shown a commitment to working in policing and potentially becoming future police leaders.

“It was a pleasure to invite Professional Policing Degree students from across the country to GMP force headquarters. Attendees found the events of significant value on their journey to becoming police officers. The vast majority of students have opted to apply to become officers in GMP. Due to demand we have further events planned for early 2023.

“During the presentations students were told about why Greater Manchester Police is a force of choice. Due to the size of the force we have significant opportunities unique to GMP, this includes promotion and lateral development. Students were also made aware of the significant investment the force has made in IT, uniforms, vehicles and the police estate to ensure our staff are some of the best equipped in the country.”

GMP has been recently removed from Special Measures in October 2022 and is one of the most improved forces in the country. Individuals from a variety of backgrounds with different skills, who are also passionate about policing and care about the communities of Greater Manchester, are needed to continue this success.
