Last chance to update your voter registration details

Residents are being urged to check that their electoral registration details are up to date as the annual canvass draws to a close.

The annual canvass ensures that the council can keep the electoral register up to date, identifying any residents who are not registered to vote so that they can be encouraged to do so.

People who have moved house recently are particularly encouraged to check their details are correct. Research by the Electoral Commission, published in 2019, indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered to vote than those who have lived at the same address for a long time.

As part of the annual canvass, from 24 September, council staff will be knocking on the doors of over 8,500 Warrington households that have not yet updated their details on the electoral register.

Warrington Borough Council’s Chief Executive, Professor Steven Broomhead MBE, said: “If your details are not up to date on the electoral register, you may not be able to vote in the next elections.

“It is a legal requirement to complete the annual household enquiry and we’ll be visiting homes that have not yet updated their details to ensure they are aware of why it’s important and how they can do so.

Canvassers will remain outside and will not request to enter your home.
