Man arrested in connection with Northwich town centre burglaries

Detectives investigating a series of burglaries in Northwich town centre have arrested a man in connection with the incidents.

The 47-year-old local man was arrested at around 12.10am today, Friday 12 May, when officers were called to reports of suspicious activity near to WH Smiths on Witton Street.

Officers were at the scene within a minute and a man was arrested nearby. He has been arrested on suspicion of three counts of burglary, possession of an offensive weapon (a hammer) and going equipped to steal.

The man is currently being held in police custody where he is being questioned by officers.

Detective Constable Claire Heatley, who is leading the investigation, said:

“We understand the concern these incidents have caused and I hope that today’s arrest will provide reassure for local residents and the wider business community.”

Enquiries to trace a second man wanted as part of the investigation remain ongoing.

Sergeant Leanne Brundrett, of Northwich Local policing unit, added;

“Its import to remember that incidents of this nature are rare in the Northwich area, and we are doing all we can to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

“Northwich is a fantastic town and we’re committed to doing all we can to ensure that it remains a safe place to live, work and visit. We will have increased patrols in the town centre throughout the weekend and I would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to an officer.”
