Manchester to mark Armed Forces Week 2022

Liverpool to celebrate Armed Forces Day

Manchester will pay tribute to the outstanding contribution of the nation’s Armed Forces this week.

On Monday 20 June the Armed Forces flag will be raised on top of Central Library at 10:30am and on Saturday 25 June there will be an Armed Forces family fun day in St Peter’s Square.  

The Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Donna Ludford will attend the flag raising ceremony, along with representatives from each of the Armed Forces – Army, Royal Navy and RAF.  The Lord Mayor will be joined at the flag raising ceremony by Mr Vikas Shah MBE DL representing the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, representatives from each of the Armed Forces – Army, Royal Navy and RAF, a fanfare from the 103RA LAV Band, Paul Marshall, the Armed Forces Champion for Manchester City Council’s Senior Management Team, Councillor Tommy Judge, Armed Forces Lead Member and Joe Larrigan, RBL County Chairman for Greater Manchester. 

On Saturday 25 June there will be an Armed Forces family fun day in St Peter’s Square from 11am until 4pm. Members of the public are invited to come along to say, ‘thank you’ and honour the members of the Armed Forces and veterans of all ages for their dedication and service. 

To start off Saturday’s celebrations, formal ceremonies will begin at 11:30 am with a ceremonial march past through St Peter’s Square. This will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Donna Ludford with Carl Austin Behan OBE representing the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. The Lancashire Artillery Band will accompany the march past and continue to perform throughout the day.  

After the formal celebrations, members of the public will be given a chance to get hands on with current and historical military kit thanks, to The Veterans Military Museum. Attendees will also be able to see an array of military hardware and learn about the extensive history of the Armed Forces.  

Moreover, local talent will be highlighted on the day with performances by The Silhouette Band, who will be performing for the first time at Armed Forces Day, as well as other artists such as Michele Dignan.  

Lord Mayor Councillor Donna Ludford said:  

 “Armed Forces Day is a very important day; it allows the city to recognise all the sacrifices the Armed Forces have made and continue to make for our country. It is also our chance to make sure all those who serve know just how much respect we have for them, and how grateful we are for their service, dedication and work to keep us all safe.”
