Mayor Joe Anderson and Chief Executive Tony Reeves have led tributes today to council employee Carol Challoner from the Leaving Care Team in Children and Young People’s Services, who has died after contracting Covid-19.
Mayor Joe Anderson said: “Carol was a dedicated, hard-working and popular colleague, who served our city for 17 years and played a central role in the Leaving Care Team. All of us at the council are devastated by the news that she has passed away. Our thoughts are very much with Carol’s loved ones at this sad time and I shall be writing to the family to offer them my sincerest condolences.”
Chief Executive Tony Reeves said: “All of us at Liverpool City Council feel deeply sad and shocked at the loss of our friend and colleague Carol. Carol was a valued and respected member of our team, who started her career at Liverpool City Council as a residential social worker and in 2008 moved to her most recent post as a personal advisor where she worked closely with young people leaving care – making a positive difference to so many.
“Carol was a popular member of staff and was full of fun – always ready with a smile or joke to cheer up her colleagues and everyone around her. We are supporting Carol’s team during this sad time.”
Mark McCarthy, Carol’s line manager, who worked with her for more than 20 years, said: “It has been a pleasure and an honour to work with Carol who was a colleague and a friend.”
This was echoed by Steve Moutray, team manager who said: “Carol was a loyal and committed member of staff who was a great team player.
“Her bubbly, easy going personality made her a real asset to the team, and the city council. She will be greatly missed by the service, her colleagues and by the young people that she supported and encouraged. We’re all thinking of her family at this time.”
Carol, who was 65, leaves behind a husband, three daughters and a son and grandchildren.
