New ways to shop at Warrington Market

Warrington Market has launched a new contactless, click and collect drive-thru, offering a new way of shopping for customers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Traders and staff at Warrington Market have worked together to create an online shopping experience, and a completely contactless drive-thru market, providing customers with a new way to take advantage of the fresh, local produce on offer.

The new online shop, which can be found at warrington.gov.uk/contactless-market, gives customers the opportunity to purchase essential items, such as meat, fruit and veg, dairy, bakery items and pet products from the comfort of their home.

Orders will then be ready to collect the following day, from the new contactless drive-thru at the rear of the current market building, while customers remain safely in their vehicle and market staff load their boot with their goods.

Council leader, Cllr Russ Bowden, said: “This is a fantastic idea from our award winning market and I’m really pleased to see council colleagues support our independent traders, and assist our community, to keep people safe, so they are still able to purchase fresh produce at this difficult time. The collaboration between the council and business owners is essential to keep the local economy alive and to help those people most in need to stay safe and well.”

John Cross, a third generation butcher at Warrington Market, said: “This new initiative is a great way for us to continue servicing our customers at this time. At present, we’re unable to offer deliveries, so the contactless collection service is a great way for us to offer our products and provide an easy and safe shopping experience, especially for some of our more vulnerable customers who are unable to visit us at the market.”

Award winning trader, Rob Leicester from Warrington Fruit and Veg, is one of a handful of traders currently offering a delivery service alongside the new click and collect option. Rob said: “Since I started my delivery service last month, I’ve been inundated with orders and have been working at full capacity.

“Thanks to the support of the market, I’m increasing the number of orders I can process every week to try and meet demand, but it’s a challenge being a small independent retailer. I’m looking forward to getting started with the new contactless drive-thru, as I will be able to supply even more customers with good quality fruit and veg, while keeping to social distancing guidelines.”

Warrington Fruit and Veg is currently supplying over 800 fruit and veg boxes per week, across the borough, with 200 boxes going to support the council’s safe and well service, which delivers food parcels to vulnerable residents and families.
