Normal services resume at borough’s household waste recycling centres

Missed recycling collections on Christmas Eve

Normal services are gradually returning to the borough’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), as traffic control measures at the Ravenhead site, Burtonhead Road will be removed today (Monday 17 May).

Burtonhead Road had been cordoned to traffic entering from the Sherdley Roundabout and Ravenhead Retail Park, with one-way and queuing systems in operation at the entrance to the HWRC.

The measures were introduced last summer in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and a spike in demand that most Centres experienced, which are managed across the region by Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA).

The news follows the announcement that a booking system in place for cars visiting the Rainhill HWRC on Tasker Terrace will also be removed today (Monday 17 May), after a gradual return to normal demand levels.

Visitors to all of the Household Waste Recycling Centres across Merseyside should continue to follow Covid-19 guidance and restrictions on site, including social distancing and wearing a face covering where possible.

Councillor Andy Bowden, St Helens Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said:

“We’re glad to see more services begin to resume normal operations, and I want to thank residents for the good citizenship they have shown throughout the pandemic.

“Wherever there has been disruption or change to everyday service, including local HWRCs – however necessary such measures were and are to keep everyone safe – everyone has adapted, pulled together and got on with the job and their lives with patience and understanding.”

Carl Beer, MRWA Chief Executive said:

“We are removing the car booking system from Sefton Meadows, Formby and Rainhill Household Waste Recycling Centres in line with the lifting of some of the national pandemic restrictions, and the move to extended summer hours at all of our sites. The Recycling Centres are now open from 8.00am – 8.00pm giving residents extended time to recycle.

“We would like to remind residents that if they intend to dispose of household waste using a van or large trailers they will still need to book an appointment online at www.merseysidewda.go.uk or if they do not have online access by calling 0774 787 340 / 0774 787 370 to visit any of the sites on Merseyside.

“We’re pleased that some of the services we offer are returning to a level of normality – but we would ask the public to still maintain sensible health and safety measures when using our sites.

“If you can, please wear a mask, and please respect the site staff and follow their instructions during your visit. Staff at the sites are unable to help residents with unloading and disposing of their waste. If you think that you will need help, you can have another person with you.”

To book a van or large trailer visit, go to www.merseysidewda.gov.uk or if you do not have online access please call 0774 787 340 / 0774 787 370.
