Police are appealing for information after a pregnant woman’s car was stolen in Chorlton, Manchester.

Officers are appealing for information following an assault in Gorton.

Police were called at around 4.25pm yesterday (Tuesday 24 November 2020) to a report of a disturbance near the Tesco petrol station on Hyde Road, Gorton.

Officers attended and enquiries established a 30-year-old man had approached a 51-year-old woman in the street and began to punch her repeatedly before pushing her to the floor.

Members of the public tried to intervene and the man subsequently assaulted a 41-year-old man with what is believed to have been a broken glass bottle.

The suspect then fled the scene in the direction of Oakfield Grove. He was later arrested on suspicion of Section 18 Assault and Section 47 Assault and remains in custody for questioning.

Both victims were taken to hospital where the man remains with potentially life changing injuries. The woman has since been discharged.

Detective Inspector Jen Tattersall of GMP’s City of Manchester Division said: “This was a violent attack which resulted in two people being taken to hospital and we wish them both a speedy recovery. Thankfully we have one man in custody where he is currently being questioned by officers.

“This took place in broad daylight and we believe multiple people will have witnessed the assault take place. We’re appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have been passing by and witnessed the attack to come forward and assist police with our enquiries.

“We understand the concern that incidents such as this can cause for communities and we want to reassure the public that our investigation is very much ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the assault.”
