Omega highways (west Warrington) improvements continue

Work has started on the latest phase of highway improvements in west Warrington, aimed at bringing major benefits to residents, motorists, cyclists and businesses.

Road and active travel improvements are now underway at the junctions of Lingley Green Avenue with Omega Boulevard and Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub (also known as Omega Local Highways Phase 1).

The work – which is expected to be completed next spring – includes the construction of an enlarged roundabout and carriageway widening.

Improvements also include new toucan crossings and new and upgraded shared foot and cycle paths.

The improvements aim to reduce existing and future congestion generated by development in the west of the borough, facilitate access to employment and provide additional and upgraded walking and cycling facilities.

Warrington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for highways, transportation and public realm, Cllr Hans Mundry: “The Omega Local Highways project is a really important scheme for west Warrington, so it’s fantastic to see the work moving forward at pace.

“The start of this phase of the scheme continues our work to reduce congestion, improve safety, encourage active travel and support this key employment area. It’s the latest boost for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in west Warrington.”

This phase of work forms part of a suite of improvements in west Warrington, including the completed upgrade of Junction 8 of the M62, widening of Burtonwood Road and Warrington West rail station.

The majority of the funding for the Phase 1 improvements are funded by the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership and developers Bloor Homes and Omega Warrington Limited.

The Omega Local Highways Project is just one part of a wider programme of transport improvements across Warrington. The council will have delivered over £100m worth of transport improvement schemes in the last five years between 2016 and 2021.

These include:

• Improvements at M62 Junction 8

• The Warrington East project – a series of transport and highways improvements on  Birchwood Way

• Further improvements to a number of junctions around Omega and Lingley Mere

• The recently opened Warrington West Railway Station

• The Centre Park Link scheme – due to open to traffic in early 2021
