Cleaner and safer streets’ and ‘better transport’ are just some of the things that residents told us they want to see in Liverpool.
Over 900 people recently took the time to complete the council’s Our City, Your Say’ survey, in which we asked what people love about the city and what they think needs improving.
It’s the start of an ongoing conversation which we have embarked on with the public, as we look to turn the page on the challenges of the past and start a new chapter of openness, in which we put residents’ needs at the heart of our decision-making.
We not only want to listen, but we want to act too, it’s all part of our journey to becoming a better council. Making sure that the people who pay to run services in the city – our residents and businesses – see their money being spent on things that are important to them.
Some of the headlines from the survey – which was accessible online, and through postcards in our libraries, Children’s Centres, Lifestyles Centres, Customer Hubs – include:
- A request for more to be done around cleaning streets and public spaces, and tackling those who dump litter and rubbish
- Fears about public safety, particularly in the night-time economy
- Concerns about Liverpool’s ‘north-south divide’, with references to poverty in the north and a perception that the south of the city receives more investment and cultural events
- Praise for the city’s cultural events programme and a request for more, particularly for children and young people, especially during school holidays
- A plea for fewer roadworks, more efficient public transport, particularly to the football grounds and the airport.
These ‘asks’ and more from the survey will now be evaluated and built into future financial plans, so they can be turned into a reality.
Others will be taken forward with council stakeholders – such as the Combined Authority – who control budgets for local transport.
We will report back on what action we have taken in the near future. At which point we will reopen conversations to hear from more people and make sure the dialogue continues.
