Schools and coronavirus

Schools are reinforcing their guidance on testing – pupils and teachers should only get tested if they are exhibiting one of the Covid-19 symptoms.

There is currently huge demand for coronavirus tests, and the message is being emphasised that people only need to get tested if they:

  • Have a high temperature
  • Have a new or continuous cough
  • Experience a loss or change to their sense of smell or taste

If there is a confirmed case in a school it won’t be necessary for entire classes or year groups to get tested – only those with symptoms or those advised by their clinician or local authority should get a test.

Similarly, there is no need for households to have a test unless they are symptomatic.

If a pupil gets tested, they do not need to provide evidence of a negative result before being allowed back to school.
