This week our city has reached a grim milestone. More than 1,000 people dead from Covid 19.

It is another stark reminder – if one was needed – that although the latest lockdown is challenging for us all, we can’t lose sight of just how destructive this virus is.

Although a gut wrenching number, in Liverpool we refuse to let these people become just another statistic.

They are our mothers and fathers. Daughters and sons. Friends and neighbours.

They were part of our community and they will become part of our collective memory.

It is the vibrancy of their lives, not the manner of their death, which will define them, and when the time is right, we will mark their loss properly.

We will come together, mourn together, remember, laugh and cry.

I continue to be so proud of the people of Liverpool and how together, we are doing everything we can to keep ourselves, our families, our communities and our city as safe as possible.

With vaccinations being rolled out it really feels as though there is light at the end of this dark tunnel, so just for a while longer, please continue to follow the guidelines and stop the spread of this devastating virus.

As we have experienced for the past ten months, we must once again draw on this city’s well of faith, fortitude and strength, knowing that those who have died will never be forgotten and that better days will come.
