This Dementia Awareness Week the Steve Prescott Bridge will be going blue in support for those living with and supporting people with dementia.
This year there are a wealth of sessions being run virtually by Liverpool City Region Dementia Advisory Group. The group is working towards making the entire region a dementia friendly community and here in St Helens Borough the council helps to support services run by a number of organisations providing advice and support for families living with dementia.
Among the sessions to join in with is a Bring Dementia Out webinar which aims to support people from the LGBTIQ+ community to deal with dementia. While dementia impacts on everyone differently there could potentially be additional challenges that are specific to a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. The session takes place on Thursday at 11am and will talk through issues such as helping people who may believe they are living in times when they were not open about their sexuality or before a time that they transitioned which can cause distress or confusion.

Councillor Anthony Burns, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Culture and Heritage, said: “This past year has no doubt had a huge impact on people living with or supporting someone with dementia and so it’s as important as ever that there is help out there for families. Through the Liverpool City Region Dementia Advisory Group there are a range of sessions online that will provide a wealth of advice and information for anyone interested.”

We are fortunate in St Helens Borough to have a range of organisations such as Age UK and St Helens Carers Centre who provide services for families in our communities. We are also delighted to be lighting up the Steve Prescott Bridge blue this week to show our support.”
