In a new social media campaign, St Helens Borough Council are celebrating the power of the local community and recognising how heroic small acts can be in the in the fight against coronavirus.
Cllr Anthony Burns, St Helens Borough Council’s cabinet member for Wellbeing, Culture and Heritage, said: “The people of St Helens have been amazing since the start of the pandemic – by following the rules and staying home as much as possible, to protect the most vulnerable and keep the pressure off our local NHS.
“I thank every one of you for staying at home as much as possible whilst we regain control over the virus. Be a Hand Washing Hero, a Space Avenger and a Face Mask Crusader. These may seem like little things, but they’re easy to do and will save lives.”
The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics confirm that most people support the lockdown measures and are following them closely.
Sue Forster, Director of Public Health for St Helens Borough Council, said: “We cannot lose focus now – the vaccine will take time to impact on cases and we know these new variants are much more serious. I know it’s tough to be apart from friends and family for so long, but we must remember we’re doing this to keep those loved ones safe.
“It’s been wonderful to see communities help one another with practical and emotional support, and to have St Helens Together coordinating volunteers to support those in need. Remember to speak out if you need help, and to check-in on your neighbours to make sure they are coping.”
