As Warrington’s Muslims join millions across the globe in Eid celebrations, marking the end of Ramadan, the Town Hall will be lit up green this evening, Thursday 13 May.

Residents are being urged to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr safely, in line with the current coronavirus restrictions, by meeting friends and family outdoors and adhering to social distancing measures.

The festival at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan is traditionally marked with communal prayers in mosques, and visits to friends and family. Celebrations will be different this year as people are asked to continue following the rules to protect themselves and others, and only meet outdoors in a group of no more than six people or two households.

Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Maureen Creaghan, said: “Eid al-Fitr is such a significant religious holiday and I wish a Happy Eid to all those who will be celebrating this weekend.

“Coronavirus has impacted so many aspects of normal life and, with restrictions starting to ease and the vaccination programme continuing, we can now look forward to better days ahead.

“I hope that, despite the challenges the last year has brought to all of our communities celebrating Eid, that you still have a wonderful time with your friends and family – even if that means having to celebrate differently.”

Newly elected councillor for Great Sankey South and Secretary of Warrington Ethnic Communities Association, Mo Hussain, and newly elected councillor for Fairfield and Howley, Sagheer Zaman, thanked the council for acknowledging Eid.

Mo said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to the council for working closely with us to light up our Town Hall to celebrate the festival of Eid. It’s been a very difficult year for everyone, being unable to meet family and loved ones and to celebrate cultural or religious events, so we wanted to do something small to put a smile on people’s faces as we mark the end of Ramadan. We will continue to work with all our communities to do similar things as we take office as newly appointed councillors.”

Sagheer said: “Warrington is a wonderful place to live with a real mix of different faiths, religions and communities. We would like to thank the council for this kind gesture to highlight the importance of Eid to celebrate the end of Ramadan. We bless you all with a very joyous and prosperous Eid al-Fitr – Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating across the borough.”
