Residents are being asked for their views on the latest review of licensed premises in St Helens town centre, which is looking to make sure the area stays vibrant and safe.
The Cumulative Impact Assessment (CIA) looks to measure the mix of licensed and non-licensed businesses in the town centre, to create a balanced economy.. The vast majority of people enjoy a night out safely and sensibly. However, the night-time economy can be associated with issues, predominantly around alcohol fuelled violence and crime and anti-social behaviour.As licensing authorities, councils play an important role in regulating the night-time economy.
It is the first review of town centre premises since the pandemic and residents will have the chance to give their thoughts on the current mixture of businesses in the town centre and any issues they wish to highlight.
The CIA review helps the council and its partners including the Police and Public Health, to review and limit, if necessary, the number of licensed premises in the town centre. It looks to make sure that the mix of businesses in the area encourages a safe thriving environment for both shoppers, staff and night time visitors. Having a safe and thriving environment will support our regeneration plans and help to revitalise our town centre.
Cllr Kate Groucutt, St Helens Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Economy, Business and Skills said: “Our priority with the Cumulative Impact Assessment is to ensure that St Helens town centre is a vibrant yet safe place for people to visit both during the day and in the evening.
“Reviewing the mix of businesses in this way should support our hospitality sector to continue to develop and thrive, encouraging the provision of a diverse offer for both local residents and visitors to the town to enjoy.
“I encourage residents and business owners to give us their views as this will give us the best opportunity to make sure that the town centre environment reflects the needs and wishes of our local community.”
