The consultation, which has been open since Thursday 19 December, closes on Monday 17 February.
The £11.6m scheme, which has been accepted for funding from the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Challenge Fund, will create a route running between Piccadilly and Victoria railway stations via the thriving Northern Quarter. The project is part of the proposed Greater Manchester-wide ‘Bee Network’, which will become the UK’s largest joined-up network for pedestrians and people on bikes.
A series of events were held in January and February, to allow interested parties to view the plans and provide their comments in person.
Proposals include new segregated cycle lanes, better walkways for pedestrians, more trees, less on-street parking, the partial pedestrianisation of Stevenson Square and a pedestrian and cycling only zone on Thomas Street (with exceptions for loading at defined times in the morning and early evening).
Executive Member for the Environment, Planning and Transport, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: “We believe that this scheme has the potential to make the Northern Quarter a more attractive, greener place and to benefit the area’s thriving businesses, so we are keen for as wide a range of people to have their say as possible.
“This scheme will contribute to our plans for cleaner air and to the city’s goal of becoming zero-carbon by 2038 at the latest – but we need to ensure that it works for everyone.
“That’s why I’m urging all city centre residents, businesses, commuters and community organisations to look at the plans and give us the benefit of their opinions before the deadline.”
