The Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Maureen Creaghan, lays a wreath at Soldiers’ Corner to commemorate the anniversary of Anzac Day.
Anzac Day takes place on Sunday 25 April to commemorate the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand forces landing at Gallipoli during World War One, in 1915, and the thousands who gave their lives.
As first citizen of the borough, the Mayor is marking the anniversary by laying a wreath at Soldiers’ Corner at Warrington Cemetery.
Soldiers from all over the Commonwealth are buried at Soldiers’ Corner, as Winwick Hospital was taken over as a military hospital during the First World War.
The Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Maureen Creaghan, said: “During these uncertain and challenging times, it’s important that we continue to recognise the contribution and sacrifices of those who lost their lives during the First World War.
“In advance of Anzac Day this year, I took this opportunity to have a moment of quiet reflection to remember those who have served their country, and continue to do so, and I would encourage everyone to do the same this Sunday.”
