St Helens Santa Dash hailed a success

Two-hundred festive fun runners donned Christmas outfits and laced up their trainers as the St Helens Santa Dash made a return to the borough on Saturday.

Organised by St Helens Borough Council’s Sports Development team, with volunteering support from St Helens parkrun and local army cadets, the event saw families, including recent participants of Sports Development’s Couch to 5k programme, complete a 4k route of Victoria Park.

Medals were presented to all participants at the end, with all proceeds going to the Mayor of St Helens Borough’s charities, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Friends of Helens Marie, who support sick and disabled children across the borough.

Mayor of St Helens Borough, Councillor Sue Murphy, said: “I’d like to thank everyone that took part for helping raise funds for two great causes close to my heart. We all know the fantastic work Alder Hey does for sick children across the city region and beyond – while the Friends of Helen Marie go about their business quietly to provide specialist equipment for sick and disabled children. The money raised from the Santa Dash will ensure these amazing charities can continue their vital work for the benefit of local children and families.”

Hailing the day a success, St Helens Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Culture and Heritage, Councillor Anthony Burns – who started the event – said: “The St Helens Santa Dash is one of the most popular community events in the borough so it was great to see it back, with so much enthusiasm shown by those that took part along the way.

“Of course, events like this wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of selfless volunteers who give up their time to help make them the success that they are – so deserved recognition needs to go to them, as well as our Sports Development team who arrange many affordable activities like this which highlight the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle in such a fun and engaging way.”

St Helens Sports Development offers a range of inclusive activities for all residents, from a youth sports programme to Fit Forever, designed for people aged 60 and over.
